By the time she was finished Harriet no longer felt like herself. Ellen had artfully curled her hair, done her makeup to perfection and even painted her fingernails and toenails a deep red. She’d picked a dress much like her own that was tight fitted yet it was jade in colour and brought out the different shades of blonde in her hair perfectly.

“I still think you should start a career in the personal stylist profession.” Harriet smiled at herself in the mirror as Ellen helped her into the strappy silver sandals she had let Harriet borrow for the night.

“I couldn’t have everyone walking round looking as good as us,” Ellen protested, “Then I’ll look normal.”

“We couldn’t have that now could we?” Harriet giggled.

“Enough mucking about,” Ellen frowned at her, “We need to get out of here. I booked a taxi. It should be here soon.” Harriet nodded and grabbed her clutch bag from under the bed to put her phone, lip gloss and money in.

“Got everything?” Ellen asked as she headed for the door. Harriet nodded, “Let’s get going!”

They arrived at the manor just a few minutes before the event was due to start. Climbing from the taxi Harriet stared at the magnificent building in front of them while Ellen paid the driver. The car sped off and Ellen placed her hand in the crook of Harriet's elbow.

"Ready?" She asked with a smile. Harriet took a long deep breath to calm her ragged nerves.

"As ready as I'll ever be." She sighed as Ellen pulled her toward the steps that led up to the front door. The hum of music came from the open double doors and Harriet felt her heart pounding all the more.

“Don’t look so terrified.” Ellen smiled with a small squeeze of Harriet’s arm.

She did not answer. Instead she forced a smile and squared her shoulders. Her heels clicked on the steps as she was forced toward the door. She held her breath as they passed over the threshold.

As they entered Harriet was taken aback by the scene. The great marble lobby was full of men and women all smartly dressed in a myriad of colours. The room was a hum of conversation.

“Let’s get mingling.” Ellen purred with excitement. She let go of Harriet’s arm and walked away disappearing into the crowd. Harriet watched her go wondering where she was supposed to start. She had never been to a mixer before and the prospect was completely foreign to her.

“Why hello beautiful.” A man stepped up beside her. He wore a black suit with matching black tie. His tanned head was shaved bald and he had striking features yet there was something slimy about him that Harriet instantly didn’t like. A waitress passed by carrying a tray of wine glasses and the man grabbed two of them quickly.

He handed one to Harriet and smiled brightly as he took a sip from his own.

“Thank you.” Harriet did her best to stop her voice from shaking as she held the glass up to him before taking a gulp.
